Every 2 years, the biggest Disney fans that exist flock to Anaheim, California for the biggest event Disney throws. It's always full of surprises during presentations and panels from various filmmakers, especially with Marvel and Lucasfilm under the Disney umbrella. This past weekend marked the first expo with a large Star Wars presence and it didn't disappoint.
There were numerous film announcements and appearances but what about games? Disney Interactive took the stage on day 3 to fill us in on what's happening in the Disney gaming world. They talked about several smaller topics such as their mobile games, the Star Wars Battle Pod arcade machine, and Playmation (which I'm still not sold on). The 3 big titles that were presented included the long awaited Kingdom Hearts 3, the highly anticipated Star Wars Battlefront, and of course, Disney Infinity.
Square Enix's Shinji Hashimoto took the stage first to fill us in on Kingdom Hearts 3. Mostly, we were shown some gameplay and he explained a few new combat mechanics. The big news on the KH3 front was that Big Hero 6 will be featured in the game. Now, it has already been announced that Disney's Tangled would be featured in the upcoming sequel, so who knows which title Square Enix might include next? Baymax will be featured prominitely in KH3, with a story focused around the thought of Baymax's old body coming back as a nemesis to the Big Hero 6 squad. It sounds really promising and I know I'm extremely excited for it.
Next up, EA with Star Wars Battlefront. Justin McCully took the stage to show us what's new with the upcoming, photo realistic game set in the original trilogy timeframe. We were shown some new gameplay of the recently announced dogfighting mode which puts you in the seat of several different aircraft from the Star Wars universe. The Battle of Jakku DLC was also discussed which links the games timeline from the original trilogy to the upcoming Episode VII: The Force Awakens. The concept art from the DLC looked gorgeous and will be free for everyone who owns a copy of the game and will release on December 8. However, if you preorder the game you can download it a week early on December 1.
Finally, Playstation came out to show off a new Darth Vader Playstation 4 that will be part of 2 separate bundles to be released on November 17. The first will be bundled with Battlefront and the second with Disney Infinity 3.0.
Disney Infinty took the stage next with a nice ovation from the crowd. It's nice to see that it's getting some recognition in its third release. They start off by explaining the core concept of Infinity to those that may not know about it and show how it's expanded into Disney, Marvel, and now Star Wars. Play sets were the next topic and one with many question marks coming into the presentation. What's the new Marvel play set and what's going on with The Force Awakens? Well, they finally announced that the next Marvel play set will be called "Battlegrounds" as well as announcing that you can use ANY Marvel figure with the new play set. FINALLY!!
We were then shown some more footage of Twilight of the Republic and the Inside Out play sets. Both look incredibly fun and Inside Out offers a unique play set with a new story in Riley's mind. Next, it's time to talk a little Rise Against the Empire, which is the original trilogy of Star Wars in play set form and they show some new footage for us as well.
Another announcement! After meeting up with the best of the best at creating in Toy Box Mode at a recent developers summit, Disney Interactive let them decide the next character to unleash into Infinity. They are bringing Peter Pan to Disney Infinity!
Shinji Hashimoto then took the stage again wielding a keyblade in hand to announce that the ultimate unlock in 3.0 will be Sora's keyblade! Probably one of the coolest unlocks yet and all you have to do is buy every character! Totally worth it... Right? Right!
Then they announced everyone in the audience would be getting a Mickey Mouse figure as well as something special. Everyone in the audience received a Kingdom Hearts King Mickey costume power disc that will only be available for the D23 expo presentation. Meaning you can't buy it anywhere unless you venture off to eBay and give in to someone else's demands. Only 5000 were even made, which made it pretty cool to receive, much like last expo's Sorcerer Mickey figure.
The only thing missing was The Force Awakens. Not much has been said on the play set and the still didn't show too much but they did bring the first 2 figures to show the crowd as well as a few guests. The figures are of Finn and Rey from the upcoming film and to present them they brought out the actors who play them, John Boyega and Daisy Ridley. Then they gave them to young fans in the audience, which was really cool.
Thats about it! It was an absolute blast attending this past weekend and I'm really excited to see what else is coming in the Disney gaming future.
